King Charles’ coronation sparked a lot of criticism and historical revision on NG Twitter. Several individuals seized the opportunity to share historical events relating to the British Monarchy. The bulk of opinions came from the critics. Many critics focused on events surrounding the coronation rather than the event itself. They were quick to point out the Nigerian president looking lost in thought in a photograph taken during the ceremony. Some argued that he just wanted to go home and couldn’t care less about the whole affair.

The performance by a popular female artiste from Nigeria, Tiwa Savage, at the event drew a lot of comments from Africans and African-Americans. She performed her soulful recording ‘Keys to the Kingdom’, which many cross-border persons criticised that it was not a good fit for her ‘colonial masters’. It became a play-field for sentiments between the ‘for’ and the ‘against’. With many arguing that the colonial era is gone and her performance, which was truly ‘lit’, should be the focus.

A popular Twitter voice raised concerns about if the newly coronated King had called his son, Prince Harry, and his brother, Prince William to show solidarity for his reign. The reaction to the tweet was off the roof. Many queried him for his expectation of a public family bonding. Others dropped think pieces relating the concerns with racism–a really interesting angle in hindsight.

All in all, it was quite the eventful coronation, and the consequent comments and think-pieces were the icing on the cake. Who knows what the next royal ceremony will bring? One thing’s for sure, I’ll be tuning in for the entertainment and opinions.
